Hygrometers - Testing and Calibrating

Testing/Calibrating the Hygrometer:
Take your digital or analog hygrometer out of the humidor. (If your analog Hygro is mounted at the front and leaves a hole when removed, grab a smooth soft cover book and weight/bookend. Place the book flat against the hole, holding it tightly in place with the weight.) Now take the Small double seal Ziploc bag (7.), clean soda bottle cap, and dropper (5.). First test the Ziploc bag by filling it with air, closing it, and lightly squeezing it. If it starts deflating, get another bag that doesn't leak. Next, get some table salt and fill the bottle cap to the top. Grab the (Clean) dropper and fill it with distilled water. Apply 4 or 5 drops of water in the salt filled cap just so the salt appears moist but not puddled. Now put one or both of your hygrometers in the Ziploc bag along with the wet salt filled bottle cap. Seal the bag. Leave it there for about 2 to 4 hours.

[By the magic of nature, wet salt will produce a perfect 75% RH.]

Now your hygrometers should be stable, sitting at the peak of 75%. If either one, digital or analog is showing a little below or above 75%, just note tolerance and remember that your hygrometer reads high/low by 2 or 3%. If your digital hygrometer can be calibrated, follow the instructions that came with it to do so. Now that you know the tolerance of your hygrometer, place them back in the humidor and our set!
